Counter Cultural: Living a Gospel-Worthy Life (1 Thess 4:9-12, Michael Krogstad)

What would your neighbors, coworkers, or classmates conclude about Jesus simply by watching your life? In 1 Thessalonians 4:9-12, Paul gives a surprisingly ordinary vision of Christian maturity built on three simple directives: love one another more and more, aspire to live quietly and mind your own affairs, and work faithfully with your hands. Christian love is not merely a learned behavior but the result of God’s transforming work in us, and it must be expressed in action even when it costs something. A quiet life is not a passive one. It is a life rooted in security rather than the need for visibility or recognition. Minding your own affairs means focusing your energy on your own obedience to Christ rather than meddling in the lives of others. Every vocation, from the teacher to the nurse to the retiree, can become an act of worship when done for God’s glory. Our testimony is not only what we say but how we live every single day. A church filled with people who love deeply, serve humbly, and work faithfully will preach the Gospel all week long.
