So much of life involves waiting on outcomes we cannot force, and Scripture reminds us that dependence on God is not a weakness but a core part of the Christian life. In 1 Thessalonians 3:11-13, the apostle Paul offers three humble requests to God on behalf of the church at Thessalonica, modeling what it looks like to trust God with the things we cannot control. He prays that God would direct his path, grow the love of the believers, and establish their hearts in holiness. These three requests reveal a countercultural posture: surrendering control to a God who is good, faithful, and deeply loving. True love, genuine growth, and lasting confidence before God are not things we can manufacture through willpower or effort. They are the fruit of God’s patient, faithful work in us. Like a distress call, the word “may” in Paul’s prayer becomes a daily invitation to open our hands and trust the One who is already at work.
